Morocco reaffirms its position on the Sahara to Staffan De Mistura

The UN Special Envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, met this week with the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita. The meeting, held in Rabat, takes place in the middle of a regional tour aimed at relaunching the UN formula on Western Sahara through round tables, in which Morocco, Algeria, the Polisario Front and Mauritania previously participated.

As reported by Europa Press, Bourita stressed during the meeting with De Mistura that there can be no political process outside the framework of the round tables defined by the UN with the full participation of Algeria. The head of Moroccan diplomacy also stressed that there can be no solution outside the Moroccan autonomy plan, which is supported by many countries.
The Moroccan side also stressed that there can be no "serious process" as long as the Polisario Front militias "violate the ceasefire on a daily basis", the Moroccan foreign ministry said in a statement.
The note also states that the talks between Bourita and De Mistura, in which the Moroccan representative to the UN, Omar Hilale, also participated, took place "in an atmosphere marked by frankness" and in "a positive and constructive spirit".
As well as travelling to Morocco, the UN Special Envoy for Western Sahara travelled this week to Mauritania, where he met the Minister of Defence, Hanana Ould Sidi, the head of Mauritanian diplomacy, Mohamed Salem Ould Marzouk, and the President, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani.
De Mistura is due to report to the members of the Security Council on 16 April on developments in the Sahara question since the adoption of resolution 2703 at the end of October.
