Morocco stands up against terrorism, Africa's biggest threat

Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita has made it clear that the country is committed to taking action against terrorist activity. Specifically, the Kingdom of Morocco has issued an appeal calling for the application of cutting-edge technologies in the fight against terrorism. 

Sub-Saharan Africa and West Africa account for 60% of the world's terrorist victims. The high numbers are of concern to the countries in the region, especially Morocco, which has already expressed its desire to combat this reality.  

Bourita took part in the third High-Level Meeting of Heads of Counter-Terrorism and Security Agencies in Africa (the ‘Marrakech Platform’), held in the city of Fez. At the meeting, he insisted that Morocco's counter-terrorism objectives are parallel to those of the platform.  

In the Moroccan politician's eyes, the key lies in the use of new technologies, with artificial intelligence and drones as the main weapons. 

Africa needs to find solutions to common challenges, and for them to be effective, they must be sought together. If countries join together to confront terrorism, their ability to defeat it will be greater.  

In this regard, it is encouraging that the latest Marrakech Platform was attended by some 60 delegations representing UN member states, as well as regional and international organisations.  

The coordination between the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and various plans created with the intention of helping countries on the African continent to curb the threats of terrorism was also praised during the leaders' meeting. In addition, the importance of the agency in training more than 1,500 law enforcement officers in 30 African countries was noted.  

Continuing with the praise, Azeedine Farhane, Morocco's ambassador in Vienna, also emphasised the country's model for confronting this type of acts of terror. Its approach is an integrated strategy that targets transnational crime through a combination of different types of measures. 

Responsibility in this battle is shared. Morocco knows this and assures that it will do its utmost to support international efforts, introduce technological innovations and confront terror.
