Morocco's military strength by 2024
The GlobalFirepower index presented the new data of the world firepower ranking that scores up to 145 countries according to their military strength and firepower.
Morocco has been ranked 61st out of 145 countries in this GlobalFirepower index. According to the report, Morocco has a power index of 1.0081 in a ranking led by the United States, ahead of Russia and China.
In terms of available troops, Morocco ranks 36th, with more than 17.33 million military resources at the North African country's disposal. According to the report, the available military personnel "are essential in any conflict, especially in protracted ones".
The North African country's investment in military equipment is also shown in the report, which examines the strength of Morocco's air force, which has 255 aircraft, including 83 fighters, 71 training aircraft, two fleets of air tankers and 70 helicopters.
In terms of ground forces, the Moroccan kingdom has 1,564 tanks, 13,710 military vehicles, 565 self-propelled artillery elements, 306 towed artillery elements and 208 rocket artillery elements.
Collaboration with the United States and France
In recent years, the Moroccan kingdom has invested heavily in acquiring advanced military equipment and upgrading its military hardware. Morocco has bought and ordered technologically advanced military equipment, mainly from the United States and France, and more recently from Israel, thanks to the good diplomatic relations that now exist as a result of the development of the Abraham Accords, whereby several Arab countries established diplomatic relations with the Israeli state under the auspices of the United States.
The US considers Morocco to be an important military ally in North Africa and the Sahel region. The North African country is seen as an important partner for maintaining security in the region in the face of the instability generated by terrorist groups and criminal gangs and the belligerent attitude of certain countries.
In fact, the Moroccan kingdom participates in important military exercises with the United States and other African countries, as in the case of the African Lion manoeuvres. For several analysts, the African Lion military exercises are a demonstration of the important military cooperation between the United States and Morocco, which in recent years has approved a roadmap to modernise its army's equipment, with France and the United States as the main suppliers.
Morocco also works closely with Europe and other African countries in operations against terrorist groups and in military manoeuvres of great relevance to the preservation of international security.
The relationship with the United States is close. In fact, Morocco has recently obtained approval for the US to supply several M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Launcher Systems (HIMARS), which have been very effective in the war in Ukraine. In addition to dozens of M57 tactical ballistic missiles (ATACMS) with a range of 300 kilometres, GMLRS guided multiple launch rocket systems with 98% effectiveness and a margin of error of just one metre, M31A2 missiles and M30A2 alternate warheads, highly mobile multi-role vehicles, International Field Artillery Tactical Data Systems (IFATDS) and AMG-154 Joint Standoff Weapon (JSOW) defensive equipment, which is the Moroccan version of the AGM-154C, with a BROACH warhead designed to destroy fortifications and shelters. In addition, dozens of radio systems for long-range battle tanks with GPS, M1084A2 cargo trucks, resupply vehicles, M1089A2 cargo and relief trailers, camouflage screens, support systems, private radios (Sincgars) and long-range vehicle systems with GPS.
As for France, the supply of the important French Rafael fighter aircraft stands out.
GlobalFirepower index values analysed
GlobalFirepower's final 2024 rankings analyse more than 60 factors to determine each country's PowerIndex (PwrIndx) score, with categories ranging from the number of military units held and financial status to logistical capabilities and geopolitical positioning.
The formula applied for this report allows smaller, more technologically advanced nations to compete with larger, less advanced nations and special modifiers, in the form of bonuses and penalties, are applied to further define the list.
Since 2006, GlobalFirepower has provided a unique analytical view of data on 145 modern military powers. The GFP ranking is based on each nation's potential ability to wage land, sea and air wars waged by conventional means. The results incorporate values related to manpower, equipment, natural resources, finance and geography represented by more than 60 individual factors used in the formulation of the GFP report's finalised rankings, offering interesting insights into a highly unstable global scenario that is currently marked by uncertainty with major conflicts such as Ukraine and Gaza.
