Nasser Bourita brings positions closer with Staffan de Mistura on Western Sahara

The Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, met in New York with the Special Envoy of the United Nations (UN) Secretary General for Western Sahara, Staffan De Mistura, during the 79th session of the UN General Assembly. This meeting was requested by De Mistura, according to a press release from the Permanent Mission of Morocco to the United Nations.
In this interview, held in the presence of the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Morocco to the United Nations, Omar Hilale, the current international dynamic promoted by King Mohammed VI in support of the Kingdom's sovereignty over Western Sahara, which respects the UN resolutions, was presented. This initiative is widely supported by more than 100 countries, including major nations such as the United States, France, the United Arab Emirates, Germany, Israel and Spain.
On this occasion, the Moroccan delegation reaffirmed the four basic principles of Morocco's position on the Moroccan Sahara:
- To seek a realistic and pragmatic political solution, centred on compromise in order to achieve a lasting solution.
- Autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only solution to this regional conflict.
- Round tables will be held with the participation of all parties, including Algeria, as the main part of this process, following Security Council resolution 2703 of 30 October 2023.
- All parties are required to respect the ceasefire as a condition for continuing the political process.
The press release concludes that De Mistura will also talk to the other parties in New York.
