The United Arab Emirates (UAE) sent an aid plane carrying 11 metric tonnes of medical supplies to Thailand on Tuesday to bolster the Asian country's work to curb the spread of the COVID-19 disease, which has left hundreds of thousands dead and millions of cases diagnosed worldwide and has also hit the Thai nation, causing 58 deaths and more than 3,100 affected, according to official statistics.

The handover served by the Emirates will help approximately 11,000 medical professionals who are fighting on the front lines against the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.

Saif Abdullah Mohamed al-Shamsi, UAE's ambassador to Thailand, referred to the shipment in positive terms noting the link between the Gulf nation and the Asian nation: "UAE and Thailand have enjoyed distinguished historical bilateral relations for almost 45 years, characterized by friendship and political consensus and cooperation in various fields. "The sending of medical assistance confirms the willingness of the UAE's leadership to develop its relations at all levels with Thailand, especially in the field of health and prevention, and to support the efforts of medical personnel to contain the pandemic," he said in the words of the Emirati news agency WAM.

This humanitarian cooperation offered to Thailand follows the last one carried out in relation to Azerbaijan. On Sunday, the UAE deployed a relief plane containing 11 metric tonnes of medical supplies to the former Soviet republic as part of Emirati's efforts to strengthen the capacity of the health sector in various countries to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Here again, some 11,000 medical professionals are benefiting from this projected assistance in their work to contain the pathogen; as have health professionals in countries such as Jordan, Colombia and the Dominican Republic, where the Gulf country has sent medical supplies over the past week to combat the coronavirus.

To date, the UAE has responded to the COVID-19 health crisis by providing more than 956 metric tonnes of aid to 68 countries, supporting more than 956,000 medical professionals in the process, putting the Arab nation at the forefront of humanitarian assistance worldwide in the international fight against the pandemic that is sweeping the globe. This cooperation has taken place with all kinds of nations, from the smallest or neediest to major international powers such as the United Kingdom, the United States and China.
