The Fórum Canario Saharaui issued an official statement in which it shows all its support and solidarity to Morocco after the earthquake suffered in the early hours of Friday to Saturday which has already left more than 2,800 dead and more than 2,500 injured.

The Forum highlighted the "commendable and titanic task of the different levels of the Moroccan administration" in attending to the victims and rescuing those affected. It also highlighted Spain's collaboration in helping as much as possible, following in the wake of the great diplomatic relationship between the North African country and Spain.

The official communiqué of the Fórum Canario Saharaui is reproduced below:

COMMUNIQUÉ OF THE FÓRUM CANARIO SAHARAUI ON THE EARTHQUAKE SUFFERED BY OUR NEIGHBOUR, BROTHER AND DEAR MOROCCO

In these difficult times, we want to send all our strength and solidarity to our neighbour and brotherly Moroccan people, hit by the earthquake this past weekend. Our prayers and thoughts are with the victims and all those affected by this terrible catastrophe.

We would also like to praise the commendable and titanic task of the various levels of the Moroccan Administration, which are continuing their efforts to rescue, evacuate and care for the injured, and to unblock the roads damaged by the earthquake, mobilising all the necessary means to respond to the repercussions of this painful tragedy.

Fórum Canario Saharaui

An effort and dedication aimed at harmonising and complementing their actions on the ground (Royal Armed Forces, Gendarmerie, Civil Protection, Health, etc.), based on efficiency and speed in order to overcome this situation, despite the difficult challenges and limitations posed by the magnitude of the earthquake, marked by responsible commitment and strong coordination between the various components of the public authorities and the civilian population, who follow and support as far as possible the efforts and guidelines set by these authorities.

In fact, the Armed Forces have deployed first class military technology for this arduous task. Radars and thermal cameras to monitor hot spots and locate survivors, mini search cameras, as well as heart rate detectors for a depth of 10 metres.

We would also like to praise and applaud all those institutions, NGOs and States which, like Spain, have shown all kinds of solidarity and support, and which have shown all the human and logistical capacity within their reach. From the Military Emergency Unit (UME), as well as firefighters and rescue teams to help in the search for survivors against the clock, especially in places as difficult to access as the High Atlas Mountains.

It is in hard times like these that the good rapport and scope of the strategic and diplomatic relations between the two countries, which are currently in robust and enviable health, is demonstrated.

Finally, now more than ever and as soon as the worst is over, we would like to invite and encourage Spanish tourists and tourists from any country to continue visiting Morocco. Many Spanish travellers come every year to visit the architectural, natural and gastronomic wonders that Morocco's historical and cultural heritage has to offer. Please, let us not leave them alone now, it will not be long before normality is restored and everything will remain the same. Tourism is an important sector in Morocco, and fear should not be spread under the cloak of excessive or misunderstood over-information, especially through the harmful multiplier effect of social networks.

In short, we remain with a lump in our throats, dismayed and attentive to the news of this tragedy. For our part, we remain at the disposal of the authorities and those affected who need it. We are with you in your grief. You are not alone. You can count on us for whatever you need, with our most sincere condolences.
