Morocco reinforces its support programmes for people with disabilities
Morocco's Solidarity Ministry has earmarked 396 million dirhams (36.6 million dollars) to support children with disabilities, underlining the government's commitment to this vulnerable group.
During a session in the House of Councillors on Tuesday, Minister Naima Ben Yahya announced that 27,50 children will benefit from a new programme, which is part of a wider initiative. This programme also includes support for 19,000 individuals through medical and technical assistance, as well as targeted support for 1,000 project leaders, with a total allocation of 53.5 million dirhams (5 million dollars).
In addition, the minister noted that other initiatives have been launched to improve the living conditions of people with disabilities, according to Morocco World News.
These projects are part of Morocco's Integrated Public Policy for the promotion of the rights of persons with disabilities, which runs from 2015 to 2025. It aims to integrate disability issues into national and local development plans, while ensuring alignment with relevant legislative and regulatory frameworks.
The minister also stressed the importance of raising awareness and encouraging families to register the disability status of their family members in order to facilitate their access to services.
Within the framework of current government initiatives, she highlighted the recent adoption of a decree establishing a disability card system, which will enter into force this year. In addition, a new disability assessment system has been introduced, with the aim of facilitating preferential access to services for persons with disabilities.
In May, the Moroccan Governing Council approved a project for the issuance of disability cards, a measure aimed at promoting the rights of persons with disabilities.
The card, which has already been implemented, will give cardholders access to a wide range of support, including financial assistance, extended medical coverage through compulsory health insurance, social assistance, employment opportunities in the private sector, and reduced or free transport costs.
On the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on 3 December, the Ministry is conducting consultations with civil society organisations to develop the National Action Plan for 2025-2026.
These meetings aim to present the findings of the National Plan, as well as to involve civil society and all relevant stakeholders in the creation and development of this initiative.
These reforms are in line with Morocco's efforts to promote social inclusion, support vulnerable groups and build a brighter future, where every citizen has the opportunity to prosper and fully exercise their rights.
