In a letter addressed to the UN Secretary-General, the First Secretary of the MSP has drawn Antonio Guterres' attention to the crucial moment facing the Western Sahara issue and the urgent need for a new approach capable of truly bringing the positions closer together and paving the way for lasting peace

After pointing out that the ‘regional context, marked by growing instability in the Sahel and North Africa, demonstrates the extent to which the resolution of this conflict has become essential for the security and prosperity of the entire region’, the First Secretary of the MSP stressed that ‘today, the trend among influential powers, especially the United States, seems to be moving towards seeking a settlement that prioritises stability in the region at any cost.’

For this reason, the letter adds, ’the MSP, faithful to its commitment to peace and dialogue, reaffirms that the time has come for the United Nations to broaden the circle of Sahrawi participation." The First Secretary of the MSP pointed out ‘that it is no longer possible to ignore the voice of the silent majority, tired of divisions, exile and war,’ stating that ‘the MSP, which is the bearer of a third Sahrawi way, proposes a path of compromise—a path of reason and realism, capable of preserving the dignity of the Sahrawi people without compromising regional stability.’

The letter adds: ‘I urge Your Excellency to encourage your Personal Envoy to present an innovative, more credible and inclusive proposal that integrates the diversity of Sahrawi forces and voices, including the MSP. The future of the peace process will depend on your ability to bring together and broaden the representation of the Sahrawi spectrum, not to exclude or submit to the monopoly of a single voice.’

The Sahrawi Movement for Peace, the letter emphasises, ‘remains convinced that true peace cannot be imposed by force or by the monopoly of a single voice, but must be built through the inclusion of other opinions and mutual respect.’

Finally, the First Secretary of the MSP indicated that ‘it is essential that the relaunch of the political process remains within the framework of the UN and that the management of its Personal Envoy has the flexibility and audacity to include other Sahrawi sensibilities such as those represented by the MSP, whose approach and commitment to a compromise solution could be key to breaking the deadlock and avoiding another collapse that would undermine the central role of the UN.’
