Pablo Sánchez Bergasa from Navarre has been honoured with the Princess of Girona Social 2025 Award for his work as founder and director of the NGO Medicina Abierta al Mundo, which leads the manufacture and distribution of in3ator, a low-cost neonatal incubator for low-resource hospitals.

Deep social commitment

A jury of experts met at the La Farga Exhibition Centre to decide which project deserved the award and decided to recognise the career of Pablo Sánchez Bergasa for ‘pursuing his dreams with passion and dedication, for his tireless vocation to transform and save lives, and for his deep social commitment. His generosity in sharing knowledge, his commitment to open source and his determination to break down barriers inspire those around him and show that innovation can be at the service of humanity’.

The award winner, present at the main event of the Tour del Talento, expressed his gratitude for the award and said that ‘if I am here it is because I am a big dreamer. A young person is worth everything they can dream of and they lose value when they let themselves be overcome by doubts, so I encourage you to dream big and to let yourselves dream. For me, I have gone too far by reaching more than one and a half million babies’.

Bergasa wanted to say a big THANK YOU, ‘to God for being a God of life, who made me fall in love with this project’, to the volunteers who trusted him and to his parents. ‘You have sacrificed your whole life for me and you are the ones who deserve the Princess of Girona Award,’ said the winner.

Pablo is an engineer and social entrepreneur whose work has saved lives in vulnerable communities around the world. With a degree in Industrial Technologies Engineering and a master's degree in Electrical Communication and Information Systems, Pablo has always shown a desire to apply technology to real problems.

A project that has impacted 30 countries

His project has had an impact in more than 30 countries, saving the lives of hundreds of newborns. The incubators are manufactured in collaboration with students from educational centres in Spain, which not only reduces costs, but also encourages community involvement. With more than 30,000 hours of operation recorded, the impact of his incubators is evident. Pablo also advocates an open source approach, allowing other organisations to replicate his model in different contexts. His work combines technological innovation, sustainability and social commitment, making his career an example of how engineering can transform lives.

The jury was chaired by Elisa Durán, advisor to cultural institutions and member of the boards of trustees of cultural and educational foundations; and made up of Ousman Umar, Princess of Girona Social Award winner and CEO of Nasco Feeding Minds, who acted as secretary; Carmen García de Andrés, president of the Tomillo Foundation; Therese Jamaa, vice-president of the Spanish Red Cross Foundation; Irene Milleiro, director of Ashoka España; Sonia Mulero, director of the Banco Sabadell Foundation; Sergi Rodriguez López-Ros, vice-rector of the Abat Oliba CEU University of Barcelona and Special Envoy for Digital Break of the Sovereign Order of Malta; Blanca Sorigué, general director of the Zona Franca Consortium; Ousman Umar, CEO of Nasco Feeding Minds and 2021 Princess of Girona Social Award winner and Antonio Delgado, professor of Commercial Law, Copyright and Innovation Law and general secretary of ESADE.
