During its 115th session held this week, the Economic and Social Council of the Arab League formally offered its financial support to Morocco in its bid to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

The Council passed a resolution urging all member states to support Morocco's efforts to co-organise the FIFA World Cup with Spain and Portugal.

In addition to preparations for the World Cup, the Council's programme included several major economic initiatives. Members assessed the implementation of the resolutions adopted at the 114th session and reviewed the activities carried out by the general secretariat during the previous period.

The economic and social dossier of the 34th ordinary summit in Baghdad was also a central topic in the debates, together with discussions on the development needs of Yemen, the Arab free trade area and progress on the customs union.

The Moroccan delegation at the session was led by Mohamed Ait Ouali, the country's ambassador to Cairo and permanent representative to the Arab League, who was accompanied by delegates from the Ministries of Economy and Finance, as well as Industry and Trade.

The backing of the Arab League is added to a series of regional supports. In December 2024, Jassim Muhammad Al-Budaiwi, secretary general of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), announced the firm support of the Gulf states during his visit to Rabat.

During a joint press conference with the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, Al-Budaiwi stated that the Gulf countries ‘will be completely willing to offer all kinds of support and cooperation to Rabat for this event’.

Meanwhile, at a recent meeting in Madrid, the Moroccan Interior Minister, Abdelouafi Laftit, and his Spanish counterpart, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, discussed security preparations for the tournament. Both emphasised the importance of collaboration between the host countries to ensure the success of the championship.

The Kingdom has been investing in the modernisation and construction of world-class stadiums. Several major cities, such as Casablanca, Rabat and Marrakech, are working on renovating their stadiums and building new complexes that will meet FIFA's international standards.

In terms of security, Morocco is adopting a series of comprehensive measures to ensure a safe environment during the event. In this sense, Rabat is working closely with Spain and Portugal, its partners in the bid, to establish a comprehensive security system covering all aspects of the event. This includes collaboration on intelligence, risk management and security protocols, not only for the stadiums, but also for transit areas, accommodation and other key points.
