On the occasion of the World Day against the Death Penalty, a campaign has been launched to call for an end to executions in Iran

While the world is rightly concerned about the war in the Middle East, Iran's weakened religious dictatorship, fearful of a popular uprising, is taking advantage of the situation to step up executions and spread terror across the country.

Since the new Iranian president, Massoud Pezeshkian, presented as a ‘reformer’, took office, more than 267 people have been executed in Iran. Since the beginning of October alone, 37 prisoners have been hanged, including three women. Recently, three other opponents, Mohammad Javad Vafaï, 29, a boxing champion, Mehdi Hassani, 48, and Behrouz Ehsani, 69, accused of being ‘apostates’ for their membership of the People's Mujahedin (PMOI) and their participation in the 2022 uprising, have been sentenced to death and face the gallows.

Jornada Internacional por la Abolición de la Pena de Muerte
International Day for the Abolition of the Death Penalty

To date, 1,500 dignitaries from 78 countries, including 450 parliamentarians, 34 political leaders, Nobel Laureates, lawyers and human rights experts support the #StopExecutionsinIran campaign. They call for urgent global action to end the regime's use of executions for political repression and to hold Iran's leaders accountable. The lack of response from the international community has encouraged the regime to continue its repression and torture, especially through executions.
