Rebuilding democracy

Biden is the new president of the United States with the great challenge of avoiding a violent confrontation between Americans.
It has not been easy, and I am sure that his job will not be easy in the future, but Joe Biden is fully accredited by Congress as the new president of the United States of America and faces the great challenge of rebuilding democracy and healing the deep wounds and divisions among American citizens caused by the worst possible attitudes of Donald Trump.
The political crisis, the crisis of principles and values of democracy, the respect for them and their defence is more serious than we usually think. It is true that the coronavirus pandemic is overwhelming us on a daily basis and clouds much of our perception of certain decisions, dangerous and aggressive positions and the excessive ambitions of some politicians who attempt to use power only for their own benefit. Far more serious, they are prepared to do whatever it takes to stay in power.
It is Joe Biden's turn to lead a hard and arduous task, hardly publicized and not at all populist or electioneering, to restore the confidence of a large part of the citizens of the United States and many millions of people around the world in the democratic system, in the separation of powers, in the market economy, in multilateralism, in dialogue and negotiation, in tolerance and respect for others.
We must not forget the domino effect that events in North America has on other countries. And it should be borne in mind that Donald Trump secured over 74 million votes and the fundamental mission is to prevent violent clashes, confrontations with radicalised groups incited by an irresponsible megalomaniac who will have to answer to justice when he leaves the White House. But we should also take into account the awakening of the majority of Americans, over 81 million who mobilised as never before in the history of the world's leading superpower to oust from the presidency an undesirable figure like Trump, whose arrogant and inhumane policy in dealing with the pandemic has caused over 370,000 American deaths. To give just one example. The promises of employment and American pride were left behind because Trump's despotic and selfish attitude was exposed and made the majority react. The attempted coup d'état with the assault on the Capitol and the demand that Vice-President Pence should not recognise Biden as the new president, in violation of the Constitution, should be sufficient elements for his permanent political disqualification, and it should be the Republican party that leads the initiative along with the Democrats. We shall see whether Trump has to face criminal responsibility.
