Algeria-Russia: crisis erupts over Wagner's presence in Africa

The symbolism of this announcement will not fail to provoke reactions and could exacerbate internal divisions. The internal crisis between the presidency and the army can also be observed within the regime, in the Tindouf camps and on the international scene.
The time, effort and energy expended on these elections will quickly give the military regime more manoeuvring and help France and Russia to wage their war in Algeria, a final battle in the country. The electoral processes organised by the regime are flawed, both legally and in their actual implementation.
Algerian opposition to the presence of the Russian paramilitary group Wagner in the Sahel region is a major source of tension. In response to the threat perceived by Algiers, talks were initiated with Russia that led to the formation of a joint committee to examine the issue. Despite these diplomatic efforts, Algeria finds itself in a delicate position: how to remain a strategic ally of Moscow while at the same time countering the influence of an armed militia that threatens its vital interests in Africa?
At the same time, Algeria has made several enemies in Africa, particularly in the Sahel. Indeed, Algeria has become the unwanted state of the Sahel and West African countries. This situation is explained by Algeria's increasing interference in strategic issues and by the crimes committed in Tamanrasset against Nigerians, Malians and Chadians.
According to Tawfik Bougaada, professor of international relations at the University of Algiers 3, Algeria could use its strategic relations with Russia to limit Wagner's activities, while exploring alternative options for its arms purchases, potentially from China, Turkey and Italy. Algeria may be blackmailing Russia for France's benefit.
To hide this, France is using Italy as a shield. In other words, France is pressuring Algeria to put pressure on the Russians by using Italy as a screen. In addition, the movements of Italian intelligence services in Algeria are intensifying.
The goal for Algiers would be to maintain its relations with Russia while satisfying the French and removing Wagner from the Sahel. However, if Russia cuts off wheat supplies to Algeria, Algeria might find Wagner much more sympathetic.
