Morocco-Spain: A great match between neighbours

Marruecos jugará este martes contre su vecina España, l

Morocco will play this Tuesday against its neighbour Spain, the news leaves no one indifferent in the two kingdoms, it is a match between two neighbours who share several centuries of history and a Strait of 14 kilometres of water and many other things; even so, they are two peoples who do not know each other very well, it is true that we have several unresolved issues in this regard.

Now it is our turn to share 90 minutes of football which, perhaps, will be the most tense 90 minutes of our recent history, millions of Moroccans and Spaniards will be on their sofas with their flags at hand, dreaming of victory, some will see the match as a battlefield where the ball becomes a weapon while others see it as a mere football match in which whoever plays better or is very lucky will win.

Tuesday's big game will be an opportunity for the Spanish people to get to know Moroccan football better and even the new Morocco that has been born on the southern shore of the Strait of Gibraltar.

It should be borne in mind that more than half of Moroccans have been following Spanish football every day for decades and know the names of all the players in the Spanish national team, some of them even speak Spanish because they spend a lot of time in front of the television watching the matches. Therefore, this match has a particular flavour that no one could dismiss.

In Morocco, Spain feels close not because of the scientific rules of geography, but because of its football teams. Also, the coach of the Moroccan national team, Walid Regragui, is already a historic coach, knows Spanish football perfectly and speaks the language of Cervantes without the help of any interpreter; moreover, this is the case for several players of the Moroccan national team. Some of these boys have never lived in Morocco, but they have shown every day that they are ready to sacrifice everything to defend, against all odds, the colours of the national flag.

True, the Moroccan team has made it clear that it is the best in its group at all levels, and this unprecedented victory will give the players and the coach a lot of confidence when it comes to facing the Spanish national team. Coach Regragui has achieved in a short time what others have failed to do for decades: to turn the national team into a single family beyond harmful egocentrism. There is no doubt that Regragui is the 12th player in the team and, at the same time, he embodies the big brother of all the members of his team, they respect him, they love him and, above all, they have confidence in his magical football.  In my opinion, he is the key secret to all these achievements at the World Cup in Qatar.

What Moroccans are experiencing these days is historic; also, several generations are experiencing it for the first time, hundreds of thousands of Moroccans take to the streets after every victory to celebrate with the national flag in their hands, every match is a party, the streets have become a walking party, many see it as a sign that the country has changed, it is no longer what it was 20 years ago and even its football.
