Global New Year's wishes

Wishes are usually made for the New Year. Here follows my incomplete list of wishes for foreign policy in 2023- with the vague hope that at least some of them will be fulfilled:
- Even if there is no chance of peace in sight in Ukraine at the moment: may Vladimir Putin's senseless war of aggression end as soon as possible, preferably through a complete withdrawal of Russian troops. The killing of innocent people and the destruction of Ukrainian infrastructure must stop. And the unconvincing Putin-understanders in Austria and the EU should not gain further support with their perpetrator-victim reversal. Recently, the narrative that the USA, NATO or the West are to blame for the war in Ukraine has been heard more and more often even in left-liberal circles.
- The recent tensions in Kosovo between Albanians and Serbs must not escalate into a veritable war. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic is once again trying to score domestic political points by stirring up the conflict. His constant manoeuvring between Russia and the EU must not be allowed to succeed either. Moscow is trying to destabilise the Balkans. The EU has to stand firm and deliver its promises to EU-candidate states in the region. Otherwise Russia, China and Turkey will step in even further.
- China's leadership under Xi Jinping should stop its threatening gestures towards Taiwan and finally assume responsibility as a world power - for example, it should stand up for peace in Ukraine and also stop spreading lies about the Corona virus.
- Iran's mullah regime should not carry out any more death sentences on those involved in the protests surrounding the death of Mahsa Amini and should finally give Iranians - especially women - more rights and allow more democracy. And Iran’s regime should stop sending drones to the Russian army.
- Afghanistan's Taliban leaders should revoke the scandalous new laws banning higher school and university education for girls and women. This also applies to the recent ban on female employees working for NGOs.
- In the parliamentary elections 2023 in Turkey, democratic forces should triumph over Recep Tayyip Erdogan and replace his authoritarian course, which has recently also led the country into a veritable economic crisis with record inflation.
- In the parliamentary elections in Poland in September, the authoritarian and anti-EU PiS government should be voted out of office. Poland could then finally take its place in the EU commensurate with the country's size and importance.
- Former US President Donald Trump must be impeached for inciting the storming of the US Capitol a year ago. As a result, he will not be allowed to run again for the highest office in the US.
- There should be real efforts on climate protection in 2023. So that young people no longer glue themselves on the streets or pour tomato juice on paintings in museums.
But New Year's wishes are like New Year's resolutions. They are seldom kept, and even more seldom fulfilled.
