Official Day of Remembrance of the Holocaust and Prevention of Crimes Against Humanity
Screening of the film "La mercancía más preciosa" (The Most Precious Commodity) and lecture ‘From Memory to Civic Consciousness: Holocaust, Critical Thinking and the Active Defence of Human Dignity,’ by Miguel Ángel Ballesteros Moscosio.
In 2005, Spain established the Official Day of Remembrance of the Holocaust and Prevention of Crimes against Humanity, in line with the resolution of the United Nations General Assembly, which proclaimed 27 January as the International Day of Commemoration and Reflection on the Holocaust. The date of 27 January was chosen by the United Nations in memory of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp on that same day in 1945.
The Three Cultures Foundation is once again joining in the commemorative events for the Official Day of Remembrance of the Holocaust and the Prevention of Crimes against Humanity by organising a ceremony to remember the victims, as well as an educational activity.
On this occasion, the educational activity is aimed at raising awareness among young people of the significance, historical context and repercussions of the Holocaust. To this end, a double programme has been prepared, consisting of the screening of the film ‘The Most Precious Commodity’ by director Michel Hazanavicius, followed by a lecture entitled "From Memory to Civic Consciousness: Holocaust, Critical Thinking and the Active Defence of Human Dignity", given by Miguel Ángel Ballesteros Moscosio, professor at the Faculty of Education Sciences of the University of Seville, followed by a debate.
The activity is aimed at 4th year ESO students, as well as 1st and 2nd year Bachillerato students and higher vocational training courses. The aim is to promote the values of respect and equality towards those we might consider different, as well as to prevent hate crimes among students.
About ‘The Most Precious Commodity’
Directed by award-winning director Michel Hazanavicius, the film uses animation to narrate the horrors of war, specifically the Nazi Holocaust.
Synopsis: During World War II, a Jewish family is deported to Auschwitz. On the train to the concentration camp, in a desperate gesture, the father throws one of his daughters into the snow, where she is rescued by a humble couple of woodcutters. By adopting the ‘most precious merchandise’, their lives — and those of those around them — will change forever.
France, Belgium/ 2025 / 81 min.
