Indra Group implements its advanced SATCOM satellite communications system
- Indra Group's European 5G-HUB project
- Pilot tests in critical environments and applications
- Impact and positioning of Indra Group
Indra Group is actively participating in the European 5G-HUB project, contributing its innovative SATCOM solution. This satellite communications system has been designed to offer secure, resilient and robust connectivity in emergency scenarios and in areas where there is no terrestrial coverage.
The project, funded by Horizon Europe and led by the University of Siena, involves the development of a state-of-the-art interoperable 5G satellite system. This system is capable of automatically switching between satellite and terrestrial communications, thus ensuring continuity of service even in the event of natural disasters such as earthquakes or tsunamis, which often cause massive network outages and hinder coordination tasks in extreme situations.
The solution proposed by Indra facilitates the real-time transmission of data and video, which is crucial for humanitarian operations, search and rescue missions, or interventions after major disasters, both on land and at sea. It is specially designed for remote areas without coverage or that have completely lost their network infrastructure due to natural phenomena.
European 5G-HUB project by Indra Group
To ensure the system's operability in critical situations, two highly relevant pilot tests will be carried out. The first, conducted in collaboration with the Italian Red Cross, will simulate a climate catastrophe that causes the total collapse of terrestrial communication networks. The second test will take place in Spain, during a real mission by the NGO Open Arms in the Mediterranean. On this occasion, one of its ships will be equipped with a state-of-the-art on-board satellite terminal provided by Indra, which will enable the execution of telemedicine applications, live video transmission from drones and the coordination of the operation in real time from land.
Indra will also develop the software for the automated management of communication requests. This tool will simulate the efficient allocation of available satellite and terrestrial resources for each request, improving coordination and the optimal use of critical capabilities in emergencies. This solution will also be used to carry out exercises similar to those planned for the terminals that will form part of the GOVSATCOM system, a key component of the European Union's Space Programme.
Pilot tests in critical environments and applications
The demonstrations in Italy and Spain represent a significant technological advance, as they will be among the first in Europe to test a hybrid model of 5G terrestrial-satellite communications in real emergency operations. This technological development consolidates the position of the Indra Group as a European leader in the space sector.
The company's capabilities contribute to strengthening security, operational efficiency and the protection of critical communications in civil and military fields, responding to the growing demand for robust and secure systems for extreme situations.
Impact and positioning of the Indra Group
With this project, the Indra Group is promoting a safer and more connected future, applying advanced technology for the benefit of society's security and well-being. The company has more than 30 years of experience and a broad portfolio of specialised solutions to address threats to public safety, solutions that are already in place in various countries around the world.
