The Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, met in Rabat with the UN Secretary General's personal envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan De Mistura.

The visit of the diplomat to the Kingdom is part of a trip he is making in the region in order to relaunch the political process of round tables with the participation of Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and the authorities of the Polisario Front, in accordance with the resolutions of the UN Security Council, in particular resolution 2654, adopted on 27 October 2022.

The meeting between Bourita and de Mistura was attended by the ambassador and permanent representative of the Kingdom of Morocco to the UN, Omar Hilale. The Moroccan delegation reminded the diplomat of Morocco's firm position on the Sahara question, a position reaffirmed by King Mohamed VI in his royal speech on the occasion of the 47th anniversary of the Green March on 6 November 2022. For Rabat, the only political solution for Western Sahara is based exclusively on Morocco's Autonomy Initiative, within the framework of the Kingdom's national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Prior to this meeting, de Mistura visited the southern Moroccan cities of Laayoune and Dakhla, where he held talks with local officials, economic actors and representatives of civil society on the economic and social panorama of these two regions of the Sahara.

This visit also allowed the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy for the Sahara to see at first hand several investment and infrastructure projects that have been carried out in recent years
