Relatives and supporters of jailed Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi on Thursday expressed ‘deep concern’ about her health and called for her release and urgent medical attention.

The ‘Free Narges’ coalition warned in a statement about the ‘deteriorating health condition’ of the 52-year-old activist, who has been imprisoned in Tehran's Evin prison since November 2021.

The coalition said it had received medical results earlier this month on 30 July showing ‘a worrying deterioration of her health due to cardiovascular risks, gastrointestinal complications and a herniated disc’.

Mohamadi was hospitalised several times during her detention since November 2021 and underwent angioplasty and stenting for a blocked coronary artery, the coalition recalls.

The stent needs to be replaced and medical tests show that two other arteries also need to be treated, according to the statement, which adds that Mohamadi also suffers from severe back and knee pain, requiring appropriate care ‘which has been denied so far’.

The activist suffers from injuries to her stomach and oesophagus, the coalition said, urging the Iranian authorities ‘to immediately release Mohamadi and ensure her prompt access to appropriate medical treatment’.

Winner of the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize, Mohamadi has been convicted and imprisoned numerous times over the past 25 years for her fight against the compulsory veil for women and against the death penalty.

‘She spent more than ten years of her life behind bars, and convictions continue to mount in retaliation for her statements from prison,’ the coalition stresses.
