Global Sumud Flotilla and its interception in Israeli waters

After more than a week travelling through Mediterranean waters, the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) of ships carrying humanitarian aid for Gaza reached Israeli waters last night, resulting in the detention of some of the vessels by the Israel Defence Forces. Specifically, 39 ships were intercepted by Israel, according to the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Arrests and transfer of passengers

In the same statement, the Ministry noted that the arrests took place ‘safely and that the passengers were transferred to Israeli ports.’ There they will be sent to Ketziot prison in the Negev desert and subsequently deported to their respective countries.

International reactions

Countries such as Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, Norway, Ireland and Turkey have called on the Israeli government to guarantee the safety of the more than 500 activists participating in the humanitarian mission at all times.

In the case of France and Italy, both governments urged their citizens not to go for fear of possible reprisals, as once they crossed the border they would not be able to provide them with full protection.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store said that ‘Israel should respect international law and handle this cautiously.’ Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin called for Israel to treat the crew of the Global Flotilla Sumud humanely.

José Manuel Albares, Minister of Foreign Affairs, reported in an interview on RTVE that he had summoned the Israeli chargé d'affaires. ‘We are analysing the whole situation,’ he said.

Along the same lines, the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, stated that "Spain will guarantee diplomatic protection and the protection of rights that may be undermined by the Israeli government's actions. The flotilla poses no danger to Israel.‘

Condemnation from Turkey, Iran and Hamas

Meanwhile, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the interception of the flotilla's ships as a ’terrorist act." Iran also joined in this condemnation, describing the act as a ‘violation of international law’, while Hamas said that Israel was committing an act of ‘piracy and maritime terrorism’. At the same time, they praised the humanitarian action carried out by Global Sumud.

Israel's warnings and measures prior to the interception

Prior to the detentions, Israeli navy ships warned all the ships in the flotilla via loudspeakers that all the humanitarian aid they were carrying had to be taken to a safe port, specifically the port of Ashdod, located about 40 kilometres from Gaza.

Once the aid arrived, it would be subjected to a security inspection before being transferred to the Gaza Strip. Hamas launched four rockets at this port last night, all of which were intercepted by the IDF.

Communication problems on the flotilla ships

Following the Israeli messages, several ships in the flotilla stopped broadcasting live images and began to experience communication problems. The first of these was the ship Sirius, on which the former mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, was travelling.

Among the arrests, that of activist Greta Thunberg stood out. According to her social media posts, she described her arrest by the Israeli navy as a ‘flagrant violation of humanitarian law’. Others who were detained denounced the Israeli navy's use of water cannons and force.

Other ships detained and the situation of the Mikeno

Minutes later, the ships Aurora, Dir Yassine, Grande Blu, Hio, Huga, Morgana, Otaria, Seulle, Spectre, Yulara, Adara and Alma were also detained by the Israeli navy. The last to be captured by Israel were: Oxigon, All-in and Captain Nikos.

One of the ships in the Flotilla, Mikeno, lost its signal and is now unaccounted for, since it entered less than 9.3 miles off the coast of the Palestinian enclave. Therefore, according to the flotilla's website, only three ships remain en route to the Gaza Strip: the Fair Lady, the Marinette and the aforementioned Milkeno, which is the closest to the Gaza coast.
