El Movimiento Saharauis por la Paz considera útil que España contribuya al proceso de paz en el Sáhara

The talks between the Secretary of the Saharawi Movement for Peace, Hach Ahmed, and the former Spanish Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, focused on the situation in Western Sahara and its latest developments, especially after the announcement made by President Pedro Sánchez concerning the readiness of the Spanish government to contribute to a peaceful solution of the Sahara problem.
This issue was also at the centre of Hach Ahmed's talks with the former Minister of Defence and prominent Socialist leader, José Bono. The SMP secretary also held other meetings with several members of parliament.
The first secretary of the SMP again insisted with his interlocutors on the need for Spain, during the mandate of the present government, to multiply its efforts and initiatives with other influential countries so that the problem of Western Sahara finds a peaceful and lasting solution as soon as possible to put an end to the suffering of the Saharawi people.
It should be recalled that, following the announcement of Spain's new position, the SMP described Pedro Sánchez's decision to abandon the negative neutrality observed so far by Spain and to get involved in attempts to find a solution to the problem of its former colony as an act of courage.
In recent statements to the Spanish radio station Onda Madrid, the first secretary of the SMP stated that the format applied so far by the UN mediators based on four parties, two of them as observers: Algeria and Mauritania, has not yielded any results in thirty years and, in order not to miss any more opportunities for a mutually acceptable solution, he suggested the involvement of other influential countries, including Spain, as well as other parties such as the Saharawi Peace Movement or the Saharawi traditional authority represented by the notables or "Chiuj".
It should be recalled that in order to promote the role of the traditional authority in the search for a settlement of the Western Sahara problem, the SMP has launched the convening of a meeting or conference for peace in which, together with personalities of international stature, tribal notables and other representatives of Saharawi civil society should participate.
