The signs of support for Morocco's initiative on Western Sahara continue to come in.

This time, it is the turn of the Dominican Republic, which "reiterates its absolute recognition of the Moroccan character of the Sahara". The Dominican Minister of Foreign Affairs, Roberto Alvarez, sent a letter to his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, in which he expressed Dominican support for the Moroccan proposal to settle the Saharawi dispute.

Roberto Alvarez sent a letter in the name of President Luis Abinader to inform King Mohammed VI of the Dominican Republic's support for the Moroccan solution for Western Sahara, which is based on a broad autonomy of the Saharawi territory under the sovereignty of the North African country, respecting the resolutions of the United Nations (UN). This proposal has received the support of important countries such as the United States, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Germany and Spain, which see the initiative as the most serious and credible solution to the Saharawi problem. The Moroccan vision also seeks to offer great capacity for manoeuvre and development opportunities for Western Sahara, forming part of the so-called southern provinces of the Alawi kingdom and leaving security and foreign policy issues in the hands of the Moroccan state.

In this way, the Dominican Republic "reiterates its absolute recognition of the Moroccan character of the Sahara" and also "considers favourably the opening of a Dominican Consulate in the city of Dakhla", precisely in this area of the southern provinces, as indicated in the letter sent by the Dominican Foreign Minister.

The Dominican Republic also "reaffirms that the autonomy initiative presented by the Kingdom of Morocco in 2007 constitutes the realistic, credible and serious solution to reach a negotiated agreement between the parties", respecting in any case the UN resolutions and the work carried out by Staffan de Mistura, special envoy of the UN Secretary General for Western Sahara.

On the other hand, Roberto Alvarez also informed his Moroccan counterpart that "President Luis Abinader has expressed the desire to make a state visit to the Kingdom of Morocco, in order to further strengthen political, commercial and cooperation ties" between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Dominican Republic.

This recent support is a further boost to Morocco's foreign policy, which is making great strides on issues of vital importance to the Kingdom, such as the Western Sahara issue. In this way, it is positioning itself much better than the Polisario Front, which on the other hand advocates holding a referendum on independence for the Sahrawi people, who have less support on the international stage, including that of Algeria, Morocco's great regional rival in the Maghreb.
