The European Jewish Association has demanded the resignation of Yolanda Díaz as Vice-President of the Spanish Government for echoing the Spanish expulsion and burning of Jews in the anti-Semitic proclamation "From the river to the sea".

The Association calls on European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Josep Borrell to strongly condemn these events and on Spanish President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, to distance the Executive from such expressions.

In an official statement, the European Jewish Association, which represents hundreds of Jewish communities across Europe, said: "Spanish Vice-President Yolanda Díaz openly calls for the genocide of the only Jewish state in the world, Israel. This cannot and must not be accepted. We immediately call on Josep Borrell to condemn this. EU member states have a treaty obligation not to call for the annihilation of third countries."

"We immediately call on President Sánchez to distance the Spanish government from these genocidal comments. The vice president's anti-Semitic 'From the river to the sea' proclamation brings with it echoes of the expulsion of hundreds of thousands of Jews from Spain in 1492, not to mention the tens of thousands burned alive in the autos de fe. Her statement is also an endorsement of Hamas ideology," the European Jewish Association said, adding that "she must resign".
