‘De cara al mundo’, the Onda Madrid programme directed and presented by Javier Fernández Arribas, director of Atalayar, analyses international current affairs on a weekly basis.

Fears are growing of an open confrontation in northern Syria between Turkey and the Kurds. Turkey is massing forces on the border with Syria in preparation for a possible offensive against Kurdish militias. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's involvement in the fall of the Assad dictatorship has as one of its main objectives the elimination of armed Kurdish groups in northern Syria. These groups were key to defeating the Daesh terrorists, but now may not have the support of the United States.

Meanwhile, the war in Ukraine continues. Russian President Vladimir Putin makes a lengthy appearance before journalists in which he assures that he will take back his Kursk region, boasts of unstoppable missiles and admits that the economy is overheating.

Meanwhile, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky admits to the EU that without the US ‘it is very difficult to maintain support for Ukraine’. Kiev is asking for ‘security guarantees’, while European leaders are looking for ways to increase aid in the face of Donald Trump's arrival and a hypothetical opening of negotiations with Russia.

On the other hand, Morocco's foreign policy has scored several points in the last few hours. With France, by securing the release of four French intelligence agents detained in Burkina Faso for a year. Meanwhile, the Moroccan town of Bouznika, which has become a symbol of Moroccan mediation, continues to host inter-Libyan discussions in a privileged setting. Moreover, in Latin America, the Paraguayan parliament has recognised Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara: with the decisive role of Amir Ohana, president of the Israeli Knesset, while Chile supports a political solution in the framework of the Moroccan autonomy initiative of 2007.

In another area, Dominique Pelicot was sentenced to the maximum penalty: 20 years in prison for raping, drugging and videotaping his wife. The other 50 defendants accused of assaulting Gisèle Pelicot were also convicted, the vast majority of them for aggravated rape, but with sentences less than what the prosecution was seeking.

The journalist and correspondent María Senovilla and the expert international analyst Lucas Martín will appear on ‘De cara al mundo’ to provide the most relevant clues.

As every day, the discussion will be led by Atalayar's regular contributors, Claudia Luna, Mexican journalist and writer, and Pedro González, journalist and founder of Euronews, coordinated by Javier Fernández Arribas; they will talk about the fall of Bashar Al-Assad's regime in Syria and the persecution of the Kurds, the war in Ukraine, the Pelicot court sentence in France and Morocco's diplomatic successes.

‘De cara al mundo’, Friday, 20 December from 10.05pm to 11pm.
