‘De cara al mundo’, the Onda Madrid programme directed and presented by Javier Fernández Arribas, director of Atalayar, deals with international news every week.

Delegations from the United States and Russia met in Riyadh to explore possible solutions to the conflict in Ukraine. This meeting was led by the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, and the Russian Foreign Minister, Serguei Lavrov, and took place without the presence of Ukrainian and European representatives, although it is considered a first step towards peace in Ukraine and the recovery of relations between Washington and Moscow.

For his part, Volodimir Zelenski claims that his meeting with the US envoy to Kiev ‘restores hope’ in the negotiations.

In addition, Pedro Sánchez will travel to Ukraine on Monday for the third anniversary of the start of the war. This Friday marks 1,095 days since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Here are the latest developments:

  • Brussels says Zelenski was ‘legitimately elected’ after Trump called him a ‘dictator’.
  • Russia launches 161 drones and a dozen missiles at Ukraine overnight
  • The White House urges Ukraine to tone down its criticism if it wants to reach a peace agreement.

Journalist and correspondent María Senovilla will offer the main keys on ‘De cara al mundo’.

Meanwhile, Emmanuel Macron, President of France, and Keir Starmer, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, will travel to Washington next week to meet with US President Donald Trump, at a time of apparent breakdown in transatlantic relations.

Meanwhile, Germany is holding early federal elections on 23 February, after German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier dissolved Parliament on 27 December and called for early elections, as requested by Chancellor Olaf Scholz after losing a vote of confidence. Since then, social networks have been flooded with everything from hoaxes seeking to criminalise migrants to videos of fake influencers created with AI to try to influence how people vote.

Miguel Ángel Benedicto, professor at the Complutense University of Madrid and director of Ideas y Debate, will analyse the situation.

With regard to the Gaza conflict, one of the four corpses handed over by Hamas to Israel is that of an unknown person and not that of the hostage Shiri Bibas as announced by Hamas. This was communicated by the Israeli Army once the autopsies had been carried out, in which the identity of the two children kidnapped by Hamas, the children of Shiri Bibas, Ariel and Kfir Bibas, was confirmed.

The body of 84-year-old Oded Lifshitz had already been identified.

Lucas Martín, an expert international analyst, will shed light on the matter.

As on each programme, the discussion will be led by Atalayar's regular contributors, Claudia Luna, Mexican journalist and writer, and Pedro González, journalist and founder of Euronews, coordinated by Javier Fernández Arribas; the discussion will cover the Gaza conflict and the handover of hostages, contacts between Russia and the United States on the issue of Ukraine, Donald Trump's controversial position on the war in Ukraine and on the position of the European Union and Germany.

‘De cara al mundo’, Friday 21st February from 22:05 to 23:00.
