Fuenlabrada commits to circular economy in the framework of the Future of Europe Conference
'The circular economy from the local level' is the title of the event held in Fuenlabrada as part of the Conference for the Future of Europe, organised by the City Council of Fuenlabrada, in collaboration with the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) and the European Movement.
Throughout the morning, issues such as: 'Responsible consumption and waste generation', 'Recycling companies, their need and challenges to face the future', 'The use of regenerated materials' and 'The role of institutions' were discussed in the Assembly Hall of the Town Hall with the participation of representatives from the Spanish Association of Pulp, Paper and Cardboard Manufacturing, the Integrated Management System for End-of-Life Tyres, the Association of Waste and Special Resources Management Companies, among others.
In the section on 'The role of the institutions', the Mayor, Javier Ayala, and the President of the Spanish Federal Council of the European Movement, Francisco Aldecoa, spoke.
Javier Ayala highlighted the importance of town councils in the commitment to the circular economy in order to resolve environmental conflicts and avoid half of greenhouse gas emissions. "Fuenlabrada City Council is committed to reducing waste generation in order to contribute to a sustainable economy, in which the value of products, materials and resources is maintained for as long as possible".
The mayor added that it is the task of local administrations to raise public awareness, carry out selective collections and build a strong industrial fabric capable of transforming waste into resources that can be reused.
Fuenlabrada has 37 waste managers and more than 1,200,000 tonnes of waste are managed in the municipality every year, which are transformed into new raw materials.
The Conference on the Future of Europe is a call to generate a space for listening to the European citizenship that translates into recommendations to be incorporated by the main institutions of the European Union. The Conference is a unique opportunity for citizens to discuss Europe's challenges and priorities.
