TVE's special envoy to Ukraine Óscar Mijallo, Atalayar correspondent and freelance journalist María Senovilla and TVE cameraman Miguel Ángel de la Fuente have been chosen as finalists for the 38th 'Cirilo Rodríguez' Journalism Award during a meeting of the jury held this Tuesday in the Library Hall of the Segovia City Hall.

A total of nine candidates competed for this award, whose honorary president is Queen Letizia and which is organised every year by the Segovia Journalists' Association, and which was analysed by a jury made up of 26 representatives of the national media and some of the prize-winners in previous editions.

Likewise, the 'Cirilo Rodríguez de Honor' award was given to the Segovian journalist Aurelio Martín, coordinator of the award since its first editions. In the words of the president of the Segovia Journalists' Association, Miguel Ángel López, Martín is the soul of the award, to which he has been committed since the award's origins.

The jury, chaired by Miguel Ángel López himself, was assisted by Victoria Domínguez as secretary.  The president of the Federation of Spanish Journalists' Associations (FAPE), the last winner of the award, Plàcid Garcia-Planas, La Vanguardia's special envoy to conflict zones, and the director of Radio Segovia, Luis Hernández, the radio station where Cirilo Rodríguez began his career, who narrated historic moments such as the arrival of man on the moon, to the Spanish people from the correspondent's office of Radio Nacional de España, were also members of the jury as ex officio members.

Before the meeting, the members of the jury were greeted by the Mayoress, Clara Martín, who highlighted the work carried out by the correspondents and special envoys to whom the award is dedicated, who often put their lives in danger. The councillor emphasised that the Cirilo Rodríguez Prize puts Segovia at the centre of the world of journalism.

Sponsored by the City Council, the Provincial Council and CaixaBank, the prize is endowed with 8,000 euros and a sculpture from the Real Fábrica de Cristales de La Granja, as well as 2,000 euros for each of the two runners-up, and a similar piece on a smaller scale.

The second jury meeting and prize-giving ceremony will be held on Friday 19 May at the Parador de Turismo in Segovia. The day before, the 15th Conference on Global Journalism will be held in collaboration with the María Zambrano Campus of the University of Valladolid (UVa).
