Known for his sincere commitment, Mohamed Cherkaoui died on Saturday 31 December 2022 in Rabat. The husband of the late Lalla Malika was both a politician and a great patriot. He was one of the signatories of the 1944 Independence Manifesto. He has also served as a minister at various times in several governments, including the first in the history of independent Morocco.

Born in 1921 in Bejaad, he was also appointed Minister of State, in charge with Abderrahim Bouabid, Driss M'hammedi and Ahmed Réda Guédira of negotiations with the French and Spanish governments for the independence of the Kingdom. Mohamed Cherkaoui also served as Morocco's ambassador to France from 1961 to 1964. He was subsequently appointed Minister of Economic Affairs (1965), Minister of Development (1966), Minister of Foreign Affairs (1967), then Minister of Defence (1968).

A graduate in law from the University of Bordeaux, Cherkaoui also obtained a diploma from the Hautes Etudes de Rabat in history and geography. He was also editor of the newspaper La Voix Nationale and was a member of the Democratic Independence Party created by Mohamed Hassan El Ouazzani in 1946.
