Morocco and Oman commit to sustainable development and the environment

Within the framework of this year's UN climate summit in Dubai, Oman and Morocco have signed an agreement aimed at expanding bilateral cooperation on sustainable development and the environment, Morocco World News reports.
The agreement was signed by Morocco's Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, and the President of the Omani Environment Agency, Abdallah bin Ali Al-Amri, at the Moroccan Pavilion on the sidelines of COP28 in the United Arab Emirates.

The treaty between Rabat and Muscat complies with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030, as well as the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and the resolutions and recommendations of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20).
The agreement also reflects the mutual understanding of the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the need for an economic momentum that takes into account sustainable development and environmental issues. The agreement also seeks to establish a "win-win strategy", providing a framework for bilateral collaboration in the areas of sustainable development and the environment.
Other areas covered by the agreement include environmental governance, monitoring and assessment, as well as waste and chemicals management.
The UN climate summit enables and facilitates the exchange of expertise in fields such as sustainable development, providing technical support to reach international multilateral environmental agreements.
Moroccan Minister Benali stressed that this agreement is a "crucial" component in strengthening the "unique" bilateral ties between Oman and Morocco. The Energy Transition and Sustainable Development Minister also indicated that the agreement demonstrates the commitment of both nations to the Sustainable Development Goals and the protection of the environment.
