The Moroccan Directorate of Civil Aviation (DGAC) has issued an information note stating that Morocco has suspended all flights. However, this office has informed that these restrictions will expire on 31 December, so that people trapped in the Alawi country and compatriots in other parts of the world will be able to leave or return to the country respectively. It has also been specified that exceptional repatriation flights are still subject to authorisation by the Moroccan authorities.

"All flights to and from Morocco are suspended from 9 December until at least 31 December," were the DGAC's exact words. On the other hand, maritime passenger transport links remain subject to these rules.

This is good news for those unable to enter or leave the Kingdom, who have been suffering the consequences of the Omicron variant since the end of last month. Moreover, the news confirms at least a decisive date for the reopening, as several media outlets around the world published that the return date would be 13 December, something that both the competent health authorities and the Ministry of Health of the Maghreb country and the State News Agency of the Kingdom (MAP News) had to deny.

This provisional date has also been announced by the national airline Royal Air Maroc (RAM) which, via the social network Twitter, issued a tweet indicating that "all flights to and from Morocco will be cancelled in both directions from 9 December until 31 December at 23:59", in the country's own time.

Since 29 December, all air and sea borders have been closed in Morocco due to the rise of the new variant of the coronavirus known as Omicron. Initially it was to be for two weeks, but according to official Moroccan media, it seems that this will be extended until the situation is under control. The department in charge of coordinating international travel management measures said at the time that this decision was taken to "preserve Morocco's achievements in the fight against the pandemic and to protect the health of its citizens".

The crisis due to the new variant is causing many countries major headaches, and one of them is Morocco. To date, the country has recorded almost one million people infected since the beginning of the pandemic.
