Algeria's self-destruction

presidente-argelia

Predictably, Algeria has reacted negatively to King Mohammed VI's challenge to build "fraternal relations", preferring to continue meandering through the darkness of unreason by announcing the severance of relations with Morocco. By analogy, the metaphor of the snake is eloquent. The reptile, while slithering among carpentry tools, brushed against the saw's cutting tooth. Furious, it reared its head and took a violent bite out of its jagged blade, severely wounding itself. Blinded by his rage, he decided to wrap his body around her while pressing violently against the sharp saw in order to suffocate her.

Algeria has self-destructed by its own anger at a historic moment of great change in the region, a moment in which the Algerian military regime was forced by the force of events to reorient its policy in the Maghreb as the only way to its own salvation.

The People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, with its antiquated political system, closed and unable to liberalise its battered economy, is running on improvisation, guided by rancour. International financial institutions and rating agencies describe it as "disastrous". The country is rigidly ruled by a military junta with President Tebboune tied hand and foot, who has become a mere mouthpiece. Algeria, like all social-communist political systems, is a country without direction and its international relations, not only with Morocco but with the entire international community, with rare exceptions (Russia, Cuba, Venezuela, Iran, South Africa...), are very difficult. Its anti-capitalist genesis has prevented the development of the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU), which was intended to unite customs, liberalise the movement of its citizens, goods and services, as well as capital, and could culminate in the creation of a single currency.

The Algerian military has been decapitalising the country since 1975, squandering an incalculable fortune on a lost cause (the Polisario). A political decision that was clearly ill-advised. Guided only by anger. As a result, Algeria is today a failed state while Morocco stands as a preponderant regional and continental power, a useful force for itself and its area of influence, including Algeria, which has lost the geopolitical battle. So Morocco's cooperative attitude towards Algeria and other neighbours in the Maghreb and on the African continent disturbs it. It is noteworthy that while King Mohamed VI offered planes to put out the fires that devastated the north of the country, with more than 100 civilian and military deaths, the pseudo-president Teboune accused Morocco and Israel, as usual and without the slightest proof, of being behind the fires.

In every commemorative speech, the King of Morocco reaches out to Algeria, knowing that the military would not accept any appeasement, but rather maintain the status quo of confrontation and where the military feels comfortable. Diplomacy does not suit them. However, the political background to the actual speeches, read primarily as testimonies that demonstrate to the international community Algeria's unreasonableness and its continued immobility in dispelling an "invented" dispute. The Security Council is already showing that it has had enough and is about to conclude with a declaration by France, Britain, China and even Russia in favour of the autonomy proposal, which already enjoys majority international support.

The international community is aware of the dramatic political, economic and social situation in Algeria that threatens not only Morocco, but the rest of its neighbours, including Tunisia, Libya, Mauritania and the Sahel on the one hand, and Spain, France and Italy on the other. While King Mohammed VI, from a constructivist vision, appeals to the logic of good sense and the supreme interests of both countries (security, stability and prosperity), proposing to leave the past behind in order to build a fraternal alliance, Algeria strikes back with the only thing it knows how to do, which is to "destroy" the minimal diplomatic relations that existed with Morocco. This explains the continuity of Algeria's failed political model based on controversy, which, moreover, sails against the tide, renouncing the obligatory adjustment of expectations in accordance with the prevailing geopolitical and geo-economic dynamics that go against its own interests.

The unhealthy rancour and unhealthy energy deployed by Algeria, since its foundation as a country, has been the key to its undoing and where it continues to entangle itself, irrationally, reptile-like on the carpenter's saw as it presses violently against its sharp teeth, self-destructing through its own anger, already in suicide mode. An irresponsible attitude on the part of the military that will only deepen the despair of the Algerian people and the impoverishment of a country that is inevitably heading for collapse.

In fact, the snake died, dissected into pieces by the force of its own anger.
