Made up of selected voices from Andalusia and Morocco, this group will give concerts in Rabat and Casablanca on 9 and 10 June

La Fundación Tres Culturas del Mediterráneo pone en marcha la nueva edición del Coro Tres Culturas

In 2023, the Three Cultures Foundation of the Mediterranean takes up again one of its most emblematic projects, an initiative designed to strengthen ties between Moroccans and Andalusians through music in a unique experience: a choir brought together expressly for the occasion which will offer concerts on both shores of the Mediterranean.

This is the Three Cultures Choir, which in this new edition will feature musicians of very different ages; thus, in addition to the exchange of experiences between people from different cultures and religions, there will be intergenerational coexistence between performers from different backgrounds.

The Andalusian members come mostly from various groups in Seville, such as ProyectoeLe, the Coro de Cámara de Sevilla, the Sociedad Musical de Sevilla and the Coro de la Asociación de Amigos de la Maestranza, among others. As for the Moroccans, they all belong to Les Voix du Choeur based in Rabat, a vocal ensemble that brings together some 50 passionate choral singers who usually perform a rich and diverse repertoire mixing tradition and modernity.

On the Spanish side, conductors Carlos Cansino and María Jesús Pacheco will also perform the works Contemplación (2002), by José Manuel Gil, and Requiem (1886-88), by Gabriel Fauré, respectively. From Morocco, the programme proposes a selection of works that form part of the Moroccan musical heritage, with a Jewish heritage, and which have been arranged by Idriss Lamarti and Aschraf Sbai, namely Achakat Tafla Andalousia & Mahani Zine by Salim Halali, Al Hamouchia, Khlili by Lemchaheb, Hbib Al Qalb by Abdessadeq Chqara and Bourakia, pieces that will be conducted by Rabii Merouane.

The vocal ensemble will be accompanied by a selection of 26 professional musicians, mostly from Morocco, with extensive experience and musical training, who will fuse the sounds of instruments such as violins and double basses with kanun, percussion and ney.

The concerts will be staged in the Mohammed V National Theatre in Rabat and the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes in Casablanca on 9 and 10 June 2023, respectively, and will bring together almost one hundred people. In autumn, a third concert will take place in Andalusia.

These recitals will be the culmination of a much broader process, in which the participants will share rehearsals, moments of exchange and days of coexistence not only to combine their voices, but above all to get to know each other better, promoting intercultural dialogue and respect for diversity, objectives of the Three Cultures Foundation in all its actions.

Before they all meet in Morocco, the choir members will be rehearsing in their respective countries from May onwards. Thus, the different members of the Andalusian part will be next weekend and the following one (6th, 7th, 13th and 14th) at the Three Cultures headquarters to start working together.
