Morocco's public transport continues to reap achievements at international level. The Al-Boraq high-speed train, inaugurated in 2018, ranks seventh globally in the list of the world's fastest trains.

According to data from Railway Technology, the Moroccan train, which runs at an operational speed of up to 320 kilometres per hour on the route linking Tangier and Kenitra - on the northwest coast of the Kingdom - is part of the most advanced high-speed train network in the world.

This ranking is topped by China with the Shanghai Maglev train, considered the fastest in the world with speeds of up to 460 kilometres per hour and using German magnetic levitation technology.

Regular trains in China and Germany register speeds of up to 350 kilometres per hour, which makes them superior to the French ‘TGV’ and Japanese ‘Shinkansen’ trains, which operate at speeds of up to 320 kilometres per hour.

Compared to the high-speed train networks of major countries, the United States and India are still working on developing trains to reach these high speeds. New trains in the US are expected to reach an operational speed of 257 kilometres per hour this year, while India is looking to develop trains with an operational speed of 220 kilometres per hour

Al-Boraq's position in this global ranking is considered a major achievement for Morocco and reflects the authorities' commitment to developing a modern transport infrastructure that enhances its position as a key centre for economic and logistical development in the region.

Recently, with the aim of further modernisation and progress, all Al Boraq trains switched to clean energy for their operation. As explained by ONCF, the National Office of Railways in Morocco, the energy transformation is being carried out gradually.

First, it started using 25% of its total consumption of green energy, later increasing to 50%. The goal is for the Kingdom's trains to reach a point where 100% of the vehicles' energy will be totally clean, reiterating the country's commitment to green energy and the environment.
