Morocco has achieved the highest level of assurance from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in nuclear safety for the first time.

The Moroccan Agency for Nuclear and Radiological Safety (AMSSNuR) announced this recognition by the atomic watchdog.

The certification reflects the strength of Morocco's infrastructure and regulatory system, its unwavering commitment to nuclear transparency and its strict compliance with international obligations on the non-proliferation of nuclear materials.

Morocco has thus obtained certification for the treatment of nuclear materials at a time when the North African country has plans to build a nuclear power plant in accordance with the requirements of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

‘For the first time, the IAEA has published in its annual report on the application of nuclear safeguards for 2024 that Morocco benefits from the extended conclusion certifying that all nuclear materials in the country are exclusively used for peaceful purposes,’ the AMSSNuR said in a press release.

Morocco has been working hard on nuclear safety in infrastructure, controls and systems since the North African country ratified the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement in 1975 and its Additional Protocol in 2011.

Morocco's line of action is clear, with a firm commitment to the peaceful and civil use of nuclear energy. The Minister for Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, recently stated that the Moroccan kingdom is committed to the principles of African cooperation and solidarity in using nuclear technology for peace and development, with the use of nuclear energy being purely civil.

One of the IAEA's missions is to support regulatory authorities around the world in ensuring nuclear safety in the operation of reactors and nuclear facilities. In the case of Morocco, which operates a TRIGA Mark II research reactor, the IAEA has helped the Moroccan regulatory body become a model of rigorous inspections, demonstrating a high level of reliability.
