Poland considers the Autonomy Plan for Western Sahara proposed by Mohammed VI in 2007 to be ‘a serious, realistic and pragmatic basis for a lasting solution’ to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

Diplomatic statement between Poland and Morocco

Last Tuesday, Poland's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Radosław Sikorski, made public the country's recent position. This joint statement was issued following a telephone conversation with Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad.

The statement was released in a diplomatic context marked by this direct exchange between the two authorities. Sikorski, responsible for Polish foreign policy, and Bourita, Morocco's representative in foreign relations, discussed relevant issues, leading to the official publication expressing the Polish government's position.

International support and opening of consulates in the Moroccan Sahara

Poland's new position reflects the international support that Morocco's Autonomy Plan has enjoyed since it was proposed at the United Nations in 2007.

Beyond verbal support, many countries have proposed the creation of a consulate in the territory to demonstrate their support in practice, as Arab countries such as the United Arab Emirates and African countries such as Chad, Gambia and Senegal have done.

This list of countries is set to grow, as the opening of a consulate in the Moroccan Sahara is an issue being discussed in congresses and parliaments in countries such as France and the United States. These projects could be key to the official recognition of the United Nations Assembly of the Sahara as part of Moroccan territory.

Diplomatic and economic relations between Poland and Morocco

In the same conversation, both foreign ministers confirmed their intention to enhance diplomatic relations and increase cooperation in defence and trade. According to the joint statement, ‘the economic dynamic between the two countries is growing strongly’.

Trade between Morocco and the European Union in 2024

Morocco is the leading African trading partner of Poland, Spain, France, Ireland, Portugal and the United Kingdom.

In 2024 alone, Morocco and the European Union as a whole achieved trade worth more than 60.6 billion euros, divided between exports from Morocco to the EU and imports from the EU to Morocco. This trade surplus is being reinvested by Morocco in its industry and in the modernisation and development of strategic infrastructure, such as ports, airports and rail transport infrastructure.

Main products traded between Morocco and the European Union

The main products traded by Morocco to Europe are machinery and equipment, transport equipment, mineral products and base metals; and from the EU to Morocco, transport equipment, machinery and equipment, vegetable products (such as agricultural foodstuffs) and textiles. It is worth highlighting the excellent relations with France and Spain, with whom Morocco traded 50.1% of the European Union's total.
