Some 464 Police Officers Have Been Killed in Mexico So Far In 2020

From January 1 to October 31, at least 464 police officers have been murdered in Mexico, a figure that exceeds the cases that occurred in all of 2019, with 446, and in 2018, with 452, reported this Monday the citizen organization Causa en Común.

Through a statement, the organization stated that the states with the highest number of police officers killed so far this year are Guanajuato, with 76 records; State of Mexico with 37, Veracruz, with 36; Guerrero, with 34 and Chihuahua, with 31. The report highlights the case of Guanajuato, an entity in the center of the country, which since 2018 ranks first in murder of police officers.

Against part, the states with the lowest number of cases are Aguascalientes, Nayarit, Tlaxcala and Yucatán, with a murdered policeman each; while Baja California Sur and Campeche do not register cases.

Regarding murders by corporations, the report highlighted those committed against municipal police. It pointed out that in the first ten months of the year there is a record of 247 cases, a figure higher than that of 2019 and 2018, when 235 and 223 murders were recorded, respectively.

As for state police killed, the count indicated that 194 had been murdered as of October, against 188 in 2019 and 198 in 2018.

In the case of homicides against federal police officers (which include National Guard agents), there is a record of 23 this year, the same number as in 2019, while in 2018 there were 31 cases.

The organization pointed out that on average 1.5 police officers are killed per day, which is why it called on the country’s authorities in charge of security to recognize and value the work and sacrifice of honest policemen, who, it said, are the majority.

In addition to demanding that their working conditions be improved in a context of deep institutional neglect against the police.

He also demanded from the authorities punish those responsible for the murders as they destroy families and attack the state.

Mexico closed 2019 with a record of 34,673 intentional homicides and 1,010 femicides, according to data from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System.

Meanwhile, between January and September 2020, the country recorded 26,231 intentional homicides, 1% more than in the same period a year ago, and 724 femicides, 0.4% more than the 721 cases in the first nine months of 2019.
