Iberdrola completes its first offshore substation in the US

Iberdrola, through its US subsidiary Avangrid, has completed the installation of its largest offshore substation. The facility will serve the Vineyard Wind I offshore wind farm, the company's first large-scale offshore wind farm in the United States, currently under construction off the coast of Massachusetts.
The facility is a critical component of Vineyard Wind's future viability. The farm, which will generate 806 MW, will be able to deliver clean, renewable energy to more than 400,000 homes and businesses in Massachusetts from the sea to the grid via two export cables.
It is the first offshore substation installed by Iberdrola in the United States and the sixth in its global portfolio. Including its two main components, the top and jacket, the installation weighs more than 5,000 tonnes, making it the largest offshore substation installed by the company in the world.
"Offshore wind energy in the United States is one step closer to becoming a reality," said Pedro Azagra, CEO of Avangrid. "The dedication, expertise and collaborative spirit of our team have made this achievement possible, and by building pioneering projects like Vineyard Wind I we remain committed to accelerating the energy transition to create a cleaner, more sustainable future for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the United States."
Iberdrola has so far installed five other substations at its offshore wind farms West of Duddon Sands (UK), Wikinger (Germany), East Anglia One (UK), St. Brieuc (France) and Baltic Eagle (Germany).
