‘De cara al mundo’: international analysis on Onda Madrid

The programme addresses Spain's refusal to increase defence spending, the conflict between Israel and Iran, the war in Ukraine and the protests in the United States against Donald Trump

‘De cara al mundo’, the Onda Madrid programme directed and presented by Javier Fernández Arribas, director of Atalayar, provides weekly analysis of world news.

The Spanish President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has sent a letter to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte denying that Spain will increase defence spending by 5% of GDP, as will be discussed next week in The Hague by allied leaders at the Atlantic Alliance summit. Sánchez claims that such an increase is counterproductive and unnecessary and would force cuts in social spending. The White House spokesperson has assured that the 5% increase applies to all NATO members, including Spain.

The international press is echoing the Spanish president's challenge as a threat to the success and unity of the Alliance in The Hague and is talking about Sánchez's ties to his far-left partners in the government and parliament. In Spain, it is interpreted as the typical search for an external enemy to distract attention from serious internal problems of corruption.

José María Peredo, professor of Communication and International Relations at the European University of Madrid, will shed light on the issue in ‘De cara al mundo’ (Facing the world).

Meanwhile, mutual attacks between Israel and Iran continue, with different assessments in each country, while US President Donald Trump has taken two weeks to decide whether to intervene in the war, after stating that he has everything ready in case he decides to act against the Ayatollah regime. Russia announces that it will not accept regime change in Iran.

On the other hand, political violence in the United States continues to be a concern following the assassination of a Democratic congresswoman. The Trump administration's anti-immigrant policy has been moderated to prevent the spread of protests in several American cities.

In addition, the war in Ukraine continues. Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that he was willing to meet with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodimir Zelenski, but only during a ‘final phase’ of negotiations ‘so as not to sit there and divide things endlessly, but to put an end to it’.

Journalist and correspondent María Senovilla and expert international analyst Lucas Martín will provide the most important insights on the programme.

As every day, the discussion will be led by Atalayar's regular contributors, Claudia Luna, Mexican journalist and writer, and Pedro González, journalist and founder of Euronews, coordinated by Javier Fernández Arribas. The discussion will focus on the wars in Ukraine and between Israel and Iran, the Spanish government's refusal to increase defence spending in response to NATO, and the violence in the United States and the protests against Donald Trump.

‘De cara al mundo’, Friday 20 June from 10:05 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
